 HSPT Resources:

Textbooks

This is the primary text that we will use. Students will each need their own copy so that they can work in the book. This has the tests that we will take and the practice exercises for class.

This is a supplement to the main book for class. This has additional practice exercises, but the lessons are not as comprehensive as the Peterson book. We will use this for additional exercises on content students need more practice with, and for the additional practice tests.

SAT Resources:

Textbooks:

The 2020 edition of the official CollegeBoard workbook. They went digital with Khan Academy in 2020, so no newer editions exist. This is still going to be accurate for the paper-based test until the SAT goes digital in the next few years.

Erica Meltzer has made some great resources for the SAT and ACT. This one focuses on SAT Grammar (for the “Writing” portion of the test).

This is Erica Meltzer’s book for the SAT Reading section.

Nielson Phu wrote this workbook for the SAT Math section, for those students who need the additional Math help. Definitely worth using as a practice guide, though some of the questions are tougher than what you’ll find on the actual SAT or ACT. If you can do these, you can handle the actual test, no problem.

ACT Resources:

Textbooks:

The whole kit-n-caboodle. This has the overall test prep guide, plus the section-specific workbooks: Science, Math, English, and Reading, all produced by the ACT company itself. This is updated for the 2022-23 years, but the test material doesn’t change that much year-to-year. Buy the books together and save some money.

Just the main ACT prep book for 2022-23. Contains six practice tests, answers, and access to online resources (like vocabulary flash cards).

The official guide to the ACT Reading section. Learn about and practice the 4 types of passages the ACT will present, along with the various question types.

The official guide to the ACT English section. Study the grammar and punctuation rules present on the test and learn how to identify errors so that you can choose the correct version of the underlined sentence every time.

The official guide to the ACT Science section. Practice analyzing diagrams, charts, and graphs, along with short passages on lab data and results or expected outcomes based on how an experiment is set up. ACT Science requires little scientific knowledge; it’s more a reading section that requires logic and synthesis with charts.

The official guide to the ACT Math section. Review the concepts you should know through Algebra and Geometry and cut your teeth on practice sets designed by the ACT company itself.

Erica Meltzer made this wonderful supplement to the SAT Grammar book for the ACT. This book goes with the SAT Grammar workbook to prepare you for the ACT English section with ease.

Erica Meltzer’s guide to the ACT Reading section. Practice the Natural Science, Social Science, Humanities, and Prose Fiction passages and learn to identify the correct answers to the various question types the ACT will send your way.

An alternative to the SAT Grammar ACT Supplement, this is a book dedicated to the ACT English section. This covers all the grammar and punctuation the Supplement does, but it also includes the rhetoric, purpose, and style questions that the ACT English section covers. This is a complete guide for ACT English, and it provides a different perspective on the test from that of the ACT company.
